How to choose an engagement ring size: a practical guide

Jubilerski zestaw do mierzenia rozmiaru pierścionka, narzędzie BELLER

Choosing an engagement ring is a special moment, but beyond the design and stone selection, the right size is crucial. A well-fitted ring should be comfortable, secure for everyday wear, and naturally complement the hand. Too loose, it might slip off; too tight, it will cause discomfort.

At BELLER, we emphasize that the ideal size is a combination of comfort, aesthetics, and practicality. It's worth remembering that finger size can subtly change throughout the day, influenced by temperature or activity, which is why accurate measurement is so important.

How to measure your ring size at home

If you want to check your ring size yourself, there are a few simple methods that can help you determine the right size before visiting a jewelry store.

Measuring an existing ring

The easiest way is to measure the internal diameter of a ring that fits well on the chosen finger. Simply use a ruler or caliper and compare the result with the jewelry size chart.

Measuring finger circumference

You can also use a thin strip of paper or string:

  • wrap the material around your finger,

  • mark the overlap point,

  • measure the length in millimeters,

  • compare the result with the size chart.

It's best to measure in the evening when your hands are at their natural size. Avoid measuring fingers after intense exercise, in low temperatures, or during heatwaves, as this can affect the result.

What affects finger size?

Finger size can change for many reasons: due to temperature, humidity, and even weight fluctuations. Therefore, a measurement taken in the morning may differ from one taken in the evening, and a size measured in summer may not be identical to one in winter. To ensure the chosen size will work for everyday wear, it's best to measure your finger several times, at different times of the day.

What to do if you don't know the size

Not knowing the size is a very common situation when choosing an engagement ring. However, there are several ways to choose the right size without revealing the surprise.

You can:

  • borrow a ring worn on the ring finger and measure its diameter,

  • ask your partner's close friend or sister for help,

  • discreetly check the size during shared jewelry shopping.

At BELLER, we also help determine the appropriate size based on photos or an example jewelry model. If the size turns out to be imperfect, it can be adjusted later, making the entire process safe and comfortable.

Common mistakes

When choosing a ring size, it's very easy to make a few basic mistakes that later affect wearing comfort.

The most common ones are:

  • measuring your finger in the morning or after exercise,

  • choosing a size that is too tight "just right,"

  • ignoring the width of the ring band,

  • comparing sizes of different hands and fingers,

  • self-measuring with inaccurate methods.

It's worth remembering that wider models may require a slightly larger size than delicate, thin rings. The internal profile of the jewelry and its finish also play a significant role.

Can the size be changed?

In most cases, the size of an engagement ring can be changed. However, the scope of adjustment depends on the design of the model, the type of stone setting, and the ring's design.

The easiest to adjust are classic models made of solid gold. Rings with stones set all around the circumference or with a very non-standard design can be more challenging.

At BELLER, we help assess the possibility of adjustment before purchase and advise on solutions that maintain the proportions and aesthetics of the ring. This ensures that the jewelry remains comfortable and perfectly fitted even after a potential size change.

Planning to surprise your partner with a proposal?

If you are choosing a ring in secret and cannot simply ask for the size, we have a few discreet methods. We described them in the article how to buy an engagement ring without knowing the size.

We will measure the size in our atelier

We can take the most accurate measurement on site, at the BELLER atelier at Mokotowska 71 in Warsaw or Szczepańska 9 in Kraków. It takes just a few minutes and immediately clears up any doubts.

5 discreet ways to determine the size without revealing the surprise

If you're choosing a ring in secret, here are five proven methods our customers use. First, a borrowed ring: when your partner isn't wearing it, trace the inner outline of one of her rings from her ring finger onto a piece of paper and bring us the drawing; we'll measure the exact size. Second, ask a friend or sister to go jewelry shopping with her and subtly try on rings, which won't raise suspicion. Third, if you have a similar build and know your own size, use it as a starting point.

Fourth, choose a neutral size: for women in Poland, this is typically between sizes 10 and 13, and the ring should ideally fit on the finger, as sizing up is more difficult than sizing down. Fifth, ask directly: more and more couples choose a ring together, and the surprise is still in the moment of the proposal. Whatever you choose, remember: every BELLER engagement ring comes with a free size adjustment, so you don't have to get it perfectly right the first time. If you opt for a custom design, we will precisely determine the size at the first meeting.
